The light, the colours and the landscape of Mont-roig del Camp gave Joan Miró all his inspiration
Joan Miró’s relationship with Mont-roig del Camp was so strong that the genius, wherever he travelled, always had a Mont-roig carob. In Mont-roig Miró he had a masia, his holiday home, and here he developed his universe and his work. It was the place he always wanted to return to, to his artistic origins, to his main emotional scenery. He went to Mont-roig del Camp, after an illness, where he decided to dedicate himself to painting against his father’s wishes. He created here a large share of his first creative production which would soon become one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He did this inspired by Mont-roig del Camp and its scenery, establishing a link with the country, based on interest in everyday objects and the natural environment.

LA MASIA
“La Masia” is the most emblematic creation dated by the artist’s figurative stage. The work’s perfectionism, as if it were handwriting, infatuated Hemingway, who bought the painting. It is an inventory of a farmer’s daily life. He wanted to summarise in a single picture his whole life in the masia. It is explained that after starting it in Mont-roig he completed it in Paris barefoot, treading on land and herbs he brought with him from the masia.

MONT-ROIG BEACH
Joan Miró liked going to the La Pixerota beach to swim and exercise. That is the beach where he drew his famous “Miró stars”, those which later would become one of the most representative symbols of his work. The Pixerota beach served as inspiration to create one of his first paintings “ Mont-roig Beach”.

MONT-ROIG, SANT RAMON
The natural forms of the Mare de Déu de la Roca hermitage motivated young Miró to show his appreciation for Cézanne. Miró said that the secret of his work was balance. The position of the hermitage of Sant Ramon, the cubic forms of the Red Rock and the whole complex, defying the laws of gravity, caught the genius’ attention.

MONT-ROIG, THE VILLAGE
The picture “Mont-roig, the Village” is one of the visions of the town painted by Miró. The picture is the view that can be seen from Les Creus, highlighting the majesty of the New Church and tightened houses that reveal long streets that overlook the sea. The work is part of the first creative stage of the genius.

THE VILLAGE AND CHURCH OF MONT-ROIG
The painting “Poble i església de Mont-roig” (Village and Church of Mont-roig) is one of the views of the village painted by Miró. It is a synthesis of what had been his work until that moment and a preview of his next figurative stage. It shows a peasant, an on-purose disproportionate 173, the typical reeds for the tomato plants, shaping the emblematic Miró stars and the new church under construction.
